 Stainless Steel 1er Cru

 

Capturing an expression of the earth one parcel at a time without losing purity of fruit and integrity of the parcel itself is a feat of monumental proportions, a certain 'je ne sais quoi' if I might say. A native Burgundian by the name of Lilian Duplessis performs such a task with great precision. 
 
A generational estate that dates back to 1895, the domaine's eight hectares are farmed organically and located entirely within the Chablis and Petit Chablis AOC's. Mainly comprised of Kimmeridgian limestone soils, most of the vineyards are 1er Cru with the exception of Les Clos, a Grand Cru parcel, In this sea of mediocrity there is Chablis, and then there is Chablis. Making wine that delights and provides a connection to the earth requires focus, a skill that Lilian exemplifies in his wines.

After experimenting for a decade, Lilian has found that his relatively young vine 1er Cru vineyard in Vaugiraut or Vosgros does not benefit from barrel fermentation or further aging in wood. It is made the same way as his village-level wines, i.e. in cuve--stainless steel tanks through and through. 

Brass Tacks: THE 2010 VAUGIRAUT is beautiful. An abundant concentration of fruit that is in keeping with this big and round vintage coats the mouth like the first coat of primer. We now have lift-off. A cold river of karst rapidly tapers through providing the basic human experience that we all so desire, happiness. Tertiary sensations begin: sweet lemon and a whisper of smoke. Nary a sign of reduction and more than just a culmination of rocks and limestone, the 2010 Vaugiraut from Lilian is a better way to drink Chablis. -DM
