From the 200 year old Distillerie Grallet-Dupic in Lorraine, France. Estate grown barley and locally harvested peat. The volcanic soil provides the ideal terroir for barley cultivation. They employ an in-house cooper whose interesting job it is to reconstruct barrels by interleaving individual staves from various used vessels. They currently produce four different single malt whiskies. The Rare Collection is aged 5 years in a combination of Fino Sherry, Cognac, and Sauternes barrels. Dark baking cocoa and leather on the nose, then picking up the fino with hints of roasted walnut and nutmeg. Dried stone fruits and chocolate in the mouth, delicate peat smoke, great texture. Plummy, with lingering peat on the finish. Good backbone at 40% abv. This is a whisky that any Scotch single malt lover can get behind, at a terrific price.
