Type: Red Wine | Country: Spain | Region: Rioja | Varietal: Tempranillo | Vintage: 2001
The greatness of the 2001 vintage in Rioja cannot be overstated. A mild winter was followed by a spring that produced just the right amount of rain for the first phase of the vegetative cycle. Excellent conditions continued throughout the growing season, with an abundance of sunshine and notable temperature drops in the evening – ideal conditions for achieving the perfect balance of ripeness and acidity. The health of the grapes that came in that October was so extraordinary that many in the region began to speak about una cosecha para la historia – an historic harvest. The closest analogue in Rioja's hundred and fifty year history as a commercial wine region is 1964, a vintage so profound that many doubted they would ever see its equal. Gran Reserva 890 is produced only from the fruit of estate-owned vines with forty or more years of age. It is composed of 95% Tempranillo from Briñas, Labastida and Villalba along with small amounts of Graciano and Mazuelo from the Melchorón I and II vineyards in Rodezno. The best bunches from these sites were transported to the bodega in 20-kilo boxes on a refrigerated truck. Alcoholic and malolactic fermentation proceeded without incident, and after the unusually cold winter of 2001-2002, a second selection was performed. In March of 2002, the finest lots were transferred into American oak barrels, 20% new and 80% fourth-use. The wine remained in barrel for six years with manual rackings performed by candlelight every six months. Bottling took place in March of 2008, and the wine was laid down to rest undisturbed in the winery's cellars for the next six and a half years…In recognition of what they feel to be one of the finest achievements in their one hundred and twenty five year history, this is the first wine from La Rioja Alta ever to carry the designation of ‘Selección Especial'.
